are tightening. governor romney makes a speech in iowa as the president has another version of the old plan with better pictures. is the president's definition of fair a reflection of comprehensive enterprise? we began with the benghazi controversy. the explanation does not stand up to what we're learning today. fox news has learned cia operatives have a laser target pinpointing the libyan border team attacking the cia andxpert but there was no counterstrike. our men were abandoned. joining us now is john bolton. also cia operative michael scheuer. good to have you both here. >> if i may. lou: why and the world are we not able to get a straight answer over seven weeks about what happened to, why? who was responsible and why is the national media seen at -- seem nothing to be anything but lapdog sat? >> why can't we get a straight answer? the story keeps shifting the administrations does not want to own up to the fundamental problem to deny ality. according to them outside is to be dumb -- defeated dumb -- defeated, copies removal was a triumph. that would require them to a bit they misjudge

states where this election will be won. >>> the final push has president obama and governor romney barnstorming seven critical swing states across the country in the hunt for 270 electoral votes. the arguments -- >> the unemployment rate is falling. manufacturing is coming back to our shores. our assembly lines are humming again. >> the passion -- >> this is an election about big things, about big choices. >> and the ground game. the critical effort to deliver key voting groups to the polls. this morning, we hear about it all from key figures on the ground in these states, all-important ohio. can romney win the white house without it? we're ask the state's republican governor, john kasich. also joining us, wisconsin's republican governor, scott walker, and colorado's democratic governor, john hickenlooper. analysis on what will tip the scales in this historically tight presidential race. from our roundtable, from msnbc, rachel maddow, "new york times" columnist, david brooks, "washington post" columnist, e.j. dionne, former ceo of hewlett-packard, now vice chair of the national rep

about what people say are completely irrelevant. governor romney has changed his position on just about everything throughout his entire career. and that, i believe, bedevils the fact checkers who will say, "well, his official position is this, but then he did that. so it's hard to know, but you can't really say, this is true because also that's true." if that's the context, if that's what's going on, then i'm not sure what can be learned at all about governor romney because the chances of him saying something different, doing something different once the election comes, based on his behavior during this campaign and while he's been running for president, are extremely high. >> let me give you an example of what people have learned. people know that governor romney is going to increase spending for the military. and that's a consequential difference. they know that president obama is going to increase taxes, where, where governor romney is not if he's elected president. that's an important issue distinction. coming into the last debate, the annenberg survey showed that the public though

the extreme weather center. with president obama and governor romney headed into the final week we want to track where the race stands with senators from four key swing states. republican problem portman who played president obama in romney's debate appropriation, 18 electoral votes if play in a state obama won in 2008 by 4.6 points and now leading by 2.3 points in the latest average of recent polls. republican ron johnson of wisconsin, ten electoral votes at state, obama won by 14 points last time and now leading by 2.3 percent. democrat mark warner, obama woman the 13 electoral votes by 16 points four years ago and now is tried and democrat part udall of colorado, obama won nine electoral votes by nine points and the race now is dead even. senator portman, the state most people think may decide the race and that is ohio, the obama camp says they have a big edge in early voting in your state and they also note they have 137 campaign offices around the country but the romney camp has only 39. >>guest: well, you mentioned first of all the real clear politics average in ohio being 2.3 per

's look at governor romney's schedule. it's ohio today. it was supposed to be virginia today, but he moved all of those events to ohio because of the storm. look where he's spending monday. it's the midwest. it's where they feel they have to pick off a couple states. it's not just ohio. it's ohio plus something else. >> as i talked to the romney campaign, they were emphasizing this momentum. they feel the debates gave him a second look to carry him through election day. obama folks, look at the electoral map map. we could be in for quite a finish if they are both right. >> they are both right. we talked the popular vote. polling out today, if you look at the president's lead for instance on the west coast in california, the lead has been cut in half. i have done back to the envelope map. romney makes up 6 million, 7 million, 8 million votes. he could pick up a bunch of votes in the non-battleground states. go to the battleground. i'll show how easy it is. if you take today's polls, the president is winning in virginia. wisconsin is on the ground. it leans toward the president. now you give

responsibility, to have the concern of the american people on the forefront. what does governor romney do or say, other than this point that he's trying to be sense and pull off the campaign trail tomorrow and not today? >> it's no accident that bill clinton was in orlando. that's a key swing area right in the heart of that i-4 corridor. there was a cnn poll out today showing a 50/49 race between the two sides. pretty much a dead-even race. missing out on a day or two to get people out to the polls can really hurt both campaigns. mitt romney has to walk this fine line and so does the president not wanting to look too political in a situation like this when you could, as bill karins mentioned, see people out of power in the millions potentially for the next few days. >> let's bring chip in on this. you don't want to look too political, but one thing some have noted is governor romney made a couple of phone calms to virginia governor bob mcdonald and chris christie, two republican governors negating to call governors who are democrats overseeing tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of p

economy and on transportation. the election will take care of itself next week. >> as for governor romney, around noon eastern time today, the romney campaign announced it is canceled all planned events tomorrow in wisconsin and florida out of what it calls, quote, sensitivity for the millions of americans in the storm's path. the governor did campaign in ohio this morning and will hold a rally in iowa later today. >> we have faced these kind of challenges before, and as we have, it's interesting to see how americans come together. this looks like another time when we need to come together, all across the country, even here in ohio and make sure that we give of our support to the people who need it. >> an emergency declarations have been signed in eight states along the east coast. new york city meantime now bracing for the worst of the storm. nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking it all for us. he joins me live from lower manhattan. bill, right now two major tunnels close later today. the holland tunnel that connects new york and new jersey, mandatory evacuations in order for lower m

states. governor romney has a packed campaign schedule holding an event in ohio and stumping in iowa and wisconsin later today. meanwhile, president obama is in a holding pattern, kangs ling events in ohio and florida to return to washington and monitor the storm. the white house canceled the president's trip to wisconsin scheduled for tomorrow. but while voters won't see him on the trail they will see him in the role of commander in chief including later this hour when he delivers a statement on the hurricane from the white house. and perhaps voters will be wondering how a president romney might handle the very same situation. one indication comes from a primary debate in june of last year, when governor romney made the case for shutting down fema and passing the responsibility on to the states. >> fema is about to run out of money and some people say do it on a case-by-case basis and some who say maybe we're learning a lesson here the states should take on more of this role. >> absolutely. every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it bac

. with president obama and governor romney headed into the final week, we want to track where the race stands with senators from four key swing states. republican rob portman of ohio, who played president romney in the debate represent and 18 electoral votes are in play en a state obama won in '08, by 4.6 points and now leads 2.3 points in the latest real clear politics average of recent polls and republican ron johnson of wisconsin, 10 electoral votes at stake and obama won by almost 14 points, last time, and, is now leading by 2.3. and democrat mark warner of virginia, obama won its 13 electoral votes by 6 points, four years ago and now is tied with romney. and, democrat mark udall of colorado, obama won the 9 electoral votes last time by nine points and the race there is now dead even. senator portman, let's start with the state i guess most people think may decide the race, that is ohio. the obama camp says they have the big edge in early voting in your state and also note that they have 137 campaign offices around the country, and the romney camp has only 39. >> well, chris, first of all

. >> fox news alert from the campaign trail. a brand-new rasmussen poll showing governor mitt romney now leaving president obama among likely voters in the critical battleground state of ohio. this is a first in this race. it is a significant shift from just a week ago when the president governor romney were tied at 40%. in most polls, the president had been leading governor romney in ohio. chris stirewalt is our fox news digital editor and also the host of the show "power play." chris, some events are being canceled because they are not being affected by hurricane sandy, but how many times have we talked about the likely voter polls, talking about how it will really matter or not romney loses ohio. no republican has ever won the white house without it. rasmussen came out with a poll showing that governor romney is taking the lead their. >> well, yes, here is the thing. we have seen all along that mitt romney could not quite close in ohio and he has continued to do better in places like florida and virginia. ohio has posed a difficulty, he couldn't close the gap with the president. what

original question. of course it's about the economy. and in ohio, both governor kasich and mitt romney are right. governor kasich is right that his policies fundamentally different than obama's, lower taxes, close the budget deficit. make, create a regulatory environment that encourages investment and certainty. that those are improving the situation. governor romney is also, however, correct that there's a long way to go. and that there are lots of people in ohio and elsewhere around this country who are unemployed or underemployed and we have huge progress. and 2% gdp growth is nothing to crow about. in fact it's less growth than in 2011 and less than 2010. >> all the economic news is about republican policies and all the bad economic news is because of democratic policies? it's funny, it's just disingenuous. >> how much of this is a problem in terms of how people feel, rachel. we see more economic optimism in the country and yet people are still feeling like the obama record is lackluster and you look at the recovery still not feeling like it's robust enough. >> and you see it just

president obama or governor romney to return to the campaign trail. they're operating with very little information. we can't know at this point just how devastating the damage might turn out to be. as a result i think both campaigns are being very cautious about what they do other than paying attention to the storm. >> woodruff: susan, what's your read on how the campaigns are dealing with all this? >> i think there are two things to look at. one is just the logistics, for instance, does this storm affect early voting that's going on now in ohio and north carolina and virginia? but a second thing is the larger atmospherics. what is the effect of having president obama go off the campaign trail back to the white house? the white house just this afternoon released a photo of him meeting in the situation room to get an update on storm damage. it seems to me that has an impact on a race where governor romney has been making some progress in recent days. does this kind of freeze things for where they are now. >> woodruff: that's what i wanted to ask you, susan. does one candidate or another

is still doing well with independent voters out there. but governor romney seems to be closing the gap when it comes to women voters. again we get back, ruth, to this whole deal of what's happening with the women's vote. >> it's certainly true in the swing states the president is ahead in more swing states than governor romney. however, the president's job approval rating and his number in all of these states is below 50%. that is a danger signal. >> that's not true. it's generally 50% or more. >> no, it's not. >> it is. >> >> i'm having flash backs to debates, guys. >> i won't interrupt you, if you don't interrupt me. >> we should get a lawyer to litigate this. >> schieffer: go ahead. >> if you go to realclearpolitics.com it's 47%, 48% for the president. that's a danger signal for him. in addition, since the denver debate, independent voters have continued to move to governor romney, and independent voters are, of course, the deciders. i believe that the president has to do a little better both in the swing states and nationally. as an incumbent, if you don't support him now or you're unde

of the political universe is ohio. president obama and governor romney are locked in a tight race to reach the magic number of 270 votes and ohio could tip the scames one way or the other. that's why the candidates are putting time and effort in the buck eye state . joining me senior political analyst for the washington examiner michael moran. >> good to be with you. >> this election may come down to ohio. what does romney have to do to win the state. >> he has to win over a lot of afluent voters necessary suburbian areas that haven't voted republican in the last couple of presidential election. areas with which republicans used to win but trended democratic over the last 20 years. on the cultural issues and he has to win them over economic and stewardship and foreign policy get the white nonblue collar. obama campaign baraged ohio with ads. biggest anti-romney ads he's outsourced job to china and he fired me and my wife got cancer and all of that sort of thing. they have seen it in ohio and white noncollege voters in ohio are considerably not likely to support romney than in other states.

tonight's events with governor romney in wisconsin and also canceling all events currently scheduled for both governor romney and congressman ryan on tuesday. governor romney believes this is a time for the nation's leaders to focus on those americans who are in harm's way. we will provide additional details with regarding governor romney's schedule when they are available. he also added my campaign will be run by the big oil companies. if i'm president you can expect a lot more of these kinds of storms over the next four years because i don't give a dam about climate change and the storms they produce. oh that was not part of the official statement. okay. and then of course leave it to fox news to say if romney's canceling events. that's fine. what a gentleman he is. what a terrific human being. if president obama is canceling events disarray. >> the president left for orlando. nothing has changed that much. does it show disarray or discontent within the obama election campaign where he comes down doesn't do anything, and then flies back. >> the president can be unpredictable. a lot

in the state of ohio. on the republican side, governor romney has been all throughout the state. but he will hit three battleground states in total today. first ohio, iowa and later wisconsin. paul ryan, the vice-presidentialal nominee is crisscrossing florida with three events across the state after he spent two days, friday and saturday throughout the state of ohio. but thng a back seat to sandy. maria molina live in the fox news extreme weather center with the latest on the track for sandy. maria, what do you see this hour. >> bill, good to see you. unfortunately sandy is coming. it is a very large storm system like we've been mentioning. over 800 miles wide. ism packs will be felt in portions of great lakes and west of michigan. waves are building 25 feet because of the storm system by early tuesday morning. portions of west virgina under a blizzard warning. we're expecting two to three feet of? factor that with strong winds you're talking about whiteout conditions across portions of the state of west virgina. toward the coast we're dealing with potential flooding across the d.c., b

in a partisan sense that in the recent debate of june of this year, governor romney -- former governor romney bashed it saying we don't need it. the states can handle these emergencies. >> these are the occasions when people say why it is that they pay taxes and why they have a government. fema was so broken and so dysfunctional back in the days of heck of a job brownie and the miserable way that we failed to protect and respond and help our citizens in new orleans to recover and under president obama, actually in a much improved fema and honestly, you know what, the republican senators say the same thing and i'm glad that they are saying it in the face of this storm. the truth is that the public safety, emergency preparedness should be nonpartisan and there are certain things that we have to be able to find a way to afford to do and protecting the public in the face of big emergencies is one of them. so it's been really inspiring to see the way that men and women have come together in our state, our national guard and our friends from colleagues from fema and crews and fast water rescue team

does it mean for early voting? governor romney's recent momentum and president obama's chance to look presidential in this final week. >>> one state already feeling the direct effect of the storm is right here just outside of us in virginia today. we're breaking down the recent success for democrats in the old dominion and what are the president's chances to do it again? good morning from a very rainy washington. it's monday, october 29th, 2012. this is "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. let's get right to my first reads of the morning. and it's this. a massive category 1 storm, but it's a large one. and it's bearing down on the east coast just eight days before the election. nearly 60 million people are in hurricane sandy's path one way or the other. and it stretches more than 800 miles from north carolina to maine. and as sandy barrels towards the east coast, it is already bringing heavy rainfall and sustained winds up to 85 miles an hour. now, it's not just wind and rain. as much as three feet of snow is forecast in parts of west virginia. officials estimate repairing the damage

where president obama and governor romney remain in statistical dead heat. "washington post/abc news poll", showing 49% support governor romney and 48% to the president. so close at this time. sean spicer communications director from the rnc coming to us every monday as he has for last couple weeks. nice to have you back. >> thanks, jenna. jenna: on a day like this public safety is paramount. we want to keep that in mind but we can't forget there is an election taking place in little more than a week. has the sudden appearance of this storm affected your strategy in any way? >> no, it hasn't affected the strategy but i think our first and foremost goal of the safety of those near or in the path of sandy. governor romney canceled some events in virginia, particularly because he didn't want to be in the way of first-responders and those who may need help after sandy goes through. we have utilized our victory centers in north carolina, virginia, pennsylvania, new hampshire to accept donations for people who might be affected. he is out there in ohio, wisconsin, iowa today. we're keeping

, that is in part a disadvantage for president obama, but it's too hard to say right now. >> hogan, governor romney is continuing that cam taken to go forward in states not impacted by hurricane sandy. it was really interesting, joe scarborough and his observations this morning he made on "morning joe." take a listen. >> this was mitt romney's best weekend, and it stops. the momentum stops. you don't know how it freezes, but it's a new dynamic into the race and changes everything with with a week to go. >> let's talk about this. not only could this stall romney's momentum, but it also brings up something that mitt romney was forceful about during the primary debates. he sad voe indicated shutting down team na and letting states handle disaster relief. watching what's taking place with sandy, know we have 12 different states that declared states of emergency and also the district, washington, d.c., does this pose a problem for mitt romney if he gets questioned on his belief about fema and tries to go to some places to look presidential post-sandy, is that an issue for him? >> that's a great point, t

obama and governor romney. someone who actually made the case for shutting down fema. in passing the responsibility on to the states and some people say maybe we're learning a lesson. how do you deal with something like that? >> absolutely every time you have an occasion that takes something from the federal government and sends it back to the states, that's the right direction. and if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better. >> governor romney says it would be better to privatize fema. that's jarring and so was his reason. >> we're borrowing $1.6 trillion more than we're taking in. we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. it is simply immoral. for us to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids knowing full well that we'll be dead and gone before it occurs makes no sense at all. >> with eight days to go in this election, that is the choice in this election. do we want a president that believes government can be there when we need it most or someone who thinks it's immoral to sp

at home. that's the right path. so read my plan, compare it to governor romney's... and decide which is better for you. it's an honor to be your president... and i'm asking for your vote... so together, we can keep moving america forward. i'm barack obama and i approve this message. athat's what the plan georged allen supports... would cost our economy. newspapers called it "economically destructive." like allen's votes to give tax breaks to companies... that ship jobs overseas, his economic plan would... help big corporations, devastating the middle class. allen even voted against tax breaks for small businesses. virginia can't afford to go back to george allen. the democratic senatorial campaign committee... is responsible for the content of this advertising. look, the reason i'm in this race is there are people that are really hurting today in this country. and we face this deficit -- could crush the future generations. and republicans and democrats both love america but we need to have leadership -- leadership in washington that will actually bring people together and get the job

the reports of governor romney's latest ad saying that the president had allowed jeep to move to china. he went back to washington and said of all the things he had said, probably her is my feeling is the most. and never had any money when i was a kid. the first new car i ever owned i was 30 years old was a jeep. i would never move the jobs. it turns out that jeep is reopening in china because they made so much money. they can afford to do it. though never consider shutting down the american operation. they are roaring in america thanks to people like the people of ohio. in keeping with that, here is what i want to say that this election is about. i support barack obama because i think he has got better jobs plan, and better record, and a better budget plan, a better education plan, at a better health care plan than governor romney. if you listen to all the debates, the republican arguments come down to the. we left him a terrible mess and in 4 years he did not fix it. we have finally discovered that middle-class people are having a hard time. put us back again. we will do the same thing w

think about governor romney? let's listen to the audio of david axelrod answering that question. >> i'm not going to tell governor romney what to do and, frankly, i don't think he is going to ask for my opinion either, but as far as the president goes, he has real responsibilities, and he, you know -- those responsibilities come first, and, you know, he is in constant contact with craig fugate, janet napolitano and all those with responsibility here and is going to monitor this. obviously, it's a very, very concerning situation. you know, in temz of the logistics, you know, we're obviously going to lose a bunch of campaign time, but that's as it has to be, and we'll try and make it up on the back end. so for us it's not a matter of optics. it's a matter of responsibility, and governor romney can decide for himself what he wants to do. >> and there you have david axelrod, chief strategist for president obama just a short time ago explaining how the obama campaign will spend their focus over the next couple of days. what president obama plans to do, but just a short time after that call

on this campaign already. president obama and governor romney have both canceled more than a dozen events in key swing states over the next several days. maryland and the nation's capital heavily democratic areas canceled early voting for today. a decision on tomorrow will be made depending on how bad this storm gets. some virginia counties have suspended in-person absentee voting, and the labor department announced the final jobs report before the election could be delayed. the october numbers are scheduled to come out friday. the bigger picture here, in a race this close we know turnout is key for both candidates. if folks don't have power and worried about their home, some worry getting to the pols won't be a top priority. who stands to gain the most from this tough situation? let's go to the table, and look, i've seen a bunch of stuff out today, the political science research which i'm very skeptical of. i would say for an incumbent president you have to do something. there's a lot of risk. there's a lot of potential for making a mistake. on a more simplistic level, i don't think if you're a

of massachusetts, mitt romnmn >> narrator: on november 5, 2002, romney was elected governor of massachusetts. he was 55 years old, the same age his father had been when he was elected governor of michigan. >> mitt romney, the 70th governor of the commonwealth of massachutts... >> and he wasted no time getting down to business... >> narrator: as governor, mitt romney hiacthe wall. the state legislature wasll dominated by the democrats. >> you could argue that he didn't run the state government, because he couldn't run the state government, because he didn't have the votes of support, and therefore that he was a republican island in a democratic sea. >> narrator: romney wasn't one of the boys-- a political backslapper-- didn't engage with the legislature on a personal basis. >> and coming from corporate america, that kind of compounded the problem. he truly didn't have an understanding of how valuable the political personal component of the business would be as he went forward with implementing the political rhetoric into political policy. narrator: romney issued more than 800 vetoes. almost all o

for the gop nomination for governor. >> narrator: ... mitt romney was back in massachusetts. >> republicans said romney . emerged as a kind of shining knight... >> lest there be any doubt, i'm in. the bumper stickers have been printed, the web site is going up tomorromorning, the campaign papers are filed today. >> narrator: it had been 40g, years since his dad had run for governor. >> thank you very much. appreciate it. >> it sort of mirrored what his dad had done. his dad had become a successful executive in american business and then served in public service as governor. so there was definitely a parallel there. >> narrator: the romney playbook's first step: create a plan. >> it was clear that to be successful in massachusetts, you had to run as a socially liberal, fiscally conservative republican. pro-choice, but concerned about spending. >> narrator: romney applied his business training to massachuses politics. >> i really think that he is a product of a world where you do market research to find outhu what's working, what's not working. you do controlled experiments. and then you dove

it to governor romney's... and decide which is better for you. it's an honor to be your president... and i'm asking for your vote... so together, we can keep moving america forward. i'm barack obama and i approve this message. >> the heaviest rains are now and will be with us through midnight. wjla.com will give you more information until we come back on the air. >> we will return at 7:00 with more hurricane coverage. teacher: this is west virginia, pennsylvania, delaware. and this is maryland. every year marylanders spend five hundred and fifty million gaming at casinos in these other states. question seven will build a new casino and bring table games to baltimore... generating hundreds of millions for schools. and that money has to go to education. it's the law. so vote for question seven. so we can stop spending all that money here, and keep maryland money in classrooms like mine.

disrupted the campaign for governor romney as well. he canceled his campaign event. there is some word out of the romney camp of some kind of storm related event in ohio tomorrow. we don't have the details, but governor romney obviously trying to stay in the spotlight on president obama is the nation's chief executive. neil: make you very much, peter. there have had been talk that there would be campaigning, but it would become relief supplies to areas affected were likely to be affected. again, there is no way to confirm that. meanwhile, looking at records. indicating that it has begun the process of shutting down electrical service. this is the area that is largely underwater. it makes it next to impossible to even try to fix things if they are all underwater anyway. but that is explaining why new york was the first point is the this. already, they were getting inundated with the flooding. it has simply gotten worse. the better part of valor is to let go and address the serious concerns through midtown and uptown manhattan. we have our meteorologist, michael,,following all of this. what

of days here. >> geraldo: so, you have both governor romney and president obama trying to balance the fact that the election is eight, nine days away, with the, first of all, the perception that they have to be paying attention, they have to be-- the president literally has to be there in command as commander-in-chief, it's a very, very difficult balancing act for them and it comes at a time. i have the polls in front of me, erin, i'd like to run over with you. first of all, we have the gallup daily tracking poll today that shows governor romney up by four points, 50-46. you have the rasmussen daily tracking poll that has governor romney up 50-47. the real clear politics average though is closer, that has 47.7 for governor and 46.8 for president obama, so, erin, real clear politics, you guys have this as a virtual dead heat? >> we do. in the national polls right now, it looks like mitt romney is ahead. he's poised to have a victory in the popular vote, if the election were held today. but if you look at the a lot of the state polls, it looks like president obama is headed for a vi

: returning to governor romney. >> i like will being able to pre -- to fire people who provide services to me. >> i heard that, and i thought, oh, that's going to be an ad. they'll clip the words. he forgot a word. it should have been bad services, but i think that would have been a chance for him to also explain the difference between government and the privet sector. if someone's not producing or helping you produce and be productive, you should have the right to fire them, look at the government. a lot of people in government, we can't fire them, like the current president. we have to wait four years. john: a business that serves you, you can fire all the time. that keeps them competitive as good, but romney didn't say that. >> he didn't. he didn't connect to workers either w we've all -- we've all worked with somebody who is not producing, and so we get it. that means more work fors, and that means less profit for our employers. john: president george w. bush criticized for trying to sell propaganda after two months from invasing iraq, flew to the pacific and then was had the big mission

. but that storm on the east coast had other ideas. >> governor romney canceled his schedule tonight but today he was still campaigning out of the storm's path in ohio. >> on the eastern coast of our nation, a lot of people are enduring some very difficult times. and our hearts and our prayers go to them. >> good day. i'm andrea mitchell live in washington. and we are in a special edition today, hurricane sandy growing stronger, reaching what could be historic strength as it heads directly for the northeast. we've got all of our reporters standing by throughout the danger zones with full reports but first, our meteorologist bill karins, live in lower manhattan, bracing for the storm surge tonight. bill, you're down there near battery city and obviously you're looking at tide coming in i guess around 8:30 tonight, is the really first test of just how bad this is going to be? >> yeah. this is slightly scary since this is what it looks like at the low tide, you know. we hit that this morning the high tide, about six hours go to the low tied, get up there. it's already gone down about four or five fe

it portrayed governor romney, showing president obama in one light and governor romney in another. tell us about the fallout from this. guest: had i been the photo editor of the newspaper, i would not have picked those photographs. i felt those photographs gave a message. if you look at the front page, you got a feeling the newspaper was trying to present a positive image of romney and of a negative image of obama. everybody i've spoken to has given me the same kind of feedback. it was a mistake for the newspaper to do that, a poor choice of gore made that decision. host: how much of the candidates visiting your state,, are the candidates visiting your state? how much attention is iowa getting on the ground? guest: all the attention we can handle. both candidates are here routinely several times a week, both of them, along with surrogates and along with their. running their there's not a single day that goes by in the state where we don't have a visit from a candidate, running mate, or significance forget. both candidates have made iowa a focal point. there are about nine states that are s

fundraising and campaigning in states in sandy's path. governor romney was still looking for votes today in ohio, iowa and wisconsin, but his campaign says he will stay away from the key swing states of virginia and new hampshire to let emergency workers there focus on the storm. both candidates say this is a time for the nation to come together. >> i am not worried at this point about the impact on the election. i'm worried about the impact on families, and i'm worried about the impact on our first responders. i'm worried about the impact on our economy and on transportation. the election will take care of itself next week. >> i would like to ask you who are here today to think about making a contrutioto the red cross or another relief agey, to be of help if you possibly can in any way you can imagine to help those in harm's way. >> reporter: not only has sandy charted an expensive and deadly path, the storm has timed its attack to disrupt the closest presidential election in many decades. the historic storm has shifted the nation's focus away from politics and cost both candidates oppo

president obama and governor romney canceled a lot of their campaign events scheduled. rightly so. they should. president obama needs to stand up and show he is the president and take charge. governor romney can't look like he is politicizing a storm where a lot of people, a lot of damage, maybe a lot of people dying. can i point something out. president obama earlier today with his fema director went to podium and gave a nice speech. be careful, people lives are number one, the most important. there is a question toward the end of the speech, what will the impact be on the election, sir? president obama said i'm not worried about the impact on the election. i'm worried about the impact on families. the election will take care of itself next week. right now the number one priority is make sure we're saving lives. my question is: where was president obama a month-and-a-half ago when four of our americans were locked down, pinned down, about to be assassinated? he was in las vegas campaigning, picking up chec checks. be fair, maybe he learned something from a month-and-a-half ago. >

in cleveland, ohio, the state where governor romney was supposed to be stomping today. let's start with you in florida. i'm incredibly jealous. pouring with rain here in washington, d.c. it must feel a world away, both weather-wise and politically. >> yes, it does. we woke up here this morning thinking the president wag going to launch his campaign. we knew this was going to be a big moment with bill clinton rolling out the big guns, if you like, and that was all canceled rather suddenly just as we woke up. so it was really strange knowing he was flying back to cope with a crisis while the rally went on and the normal things you hear at these rallies, the political campaign was going on. and the storm was mentioned by bill clinton but really not heavily. only in passing. and i think people are obviously talking about it to a certain extent. it's not in the front of their minds. what it does politically, conventional campaigning has ceased. it takes the two candidates off the media. i don't think people will be interested in them anyway. the normal style of campaigning has stopped. i don't m

at the white house this afternoon to monitor the hurricane. governor mitt romney is campaigning in ohio, iowa, and wisconsin today. he canceled altitude.tv stops in virginia yesterday. and an event scheduled in new hampshire tomorrow. >>> hurricane sandy also cancelling early voting in dc and maryland. there were long lines on saturday and both the district and maryland. maryland governor martin o'malley declared a state of emergency. the dc board of elections will decide later today if early voting will be canceled tomorrow. >>> coming up, tucker's back with another check of sandy's track. >>> plus is the storm scaring your kids? we're going to get tips from a psychologist on how to ease fear. we'll be right back. ight back. [ minto ] you know, those ads saying mitt romney would ban all abortions and contraception seemed a bit extreme. so i looked into it. turns out, romney doesn't oppose contraception at all. in fact, he thinks abortion should be an option in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother's life. this issue's important to me, but i'm more concerned about the debt our children w

hampshire, where he criticized romney's record as governor of the neighboring massachusetts. >> during governor romney's campaign down there, he promised the same thing he is promising now. he said he would fight for jobs and middle-class families. but once he took office, he pushed through a tax cut that overwhelmingly benefit 278 of the wealthiest families in the state, and then he raised taxes and fees on middle-class families to the tune of $750 million. does that sound familiar to you? >> appearing in ohio, romney rallied supporters by invoking the mantra of a fictional football team depicted in the television drama "friday night lights." >> there is a fictional football team that used to be on tv, and as the team would go out of their locker room often facing a daunting team there would touch a sign that said, clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose. you have seen it. and that is how i feel about ohio. you have clear eyes, and full hearts, and on november 6, we cannot lose with your help. we are taking back america. >> at these four people were killed sunday when u.s. drones struck n

. >> as for mitt romney, he and paul ryan have canceled events tonight and tomorrow, but earlier in ohio governor romney did extend his concern and sympathy. >> on the eastern coast of our nation a lot of people are enduring some very difficult times, and our hearts and our prayers go to them. >> indeed. prayers are always important, but even more so if romney were to become president since prayer and the private sector would take the place of the federal emergency management agency as he stated in a tea party debate last year. >> fema is about to run out of money and there are some people who say do it on a case by case basis and some saying maybe we're learning a lesson that states should take on more of a role. absolutely. every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. if you can go any further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better. >> to which one might ask, even better for who, mr. romney? we'll get to our panel for more on the intersection of a hurricane and presidential campaign

the next couple of days as governor mitt romney is trying to make the argument that he deserves to be the president of the united states. >> gretchen: thank you very much. >> brian: at least you are bill clinton and he gets big crowds. it is delegate campaigning. >> steve: because the eyes of the nation are on the eye the storm. >> gretchen: eyes are on how the candidates handle it. the president in the libya situation he went to campaign and got blow back for that. ship with 17 people on board in distress as hurricane sandy moves up the east coast. hmy near hatters it is taking on water. the coast guard said it is monitoring thuation. hurricane sandy silencing the opening bell. it is the first weather related closure in twen years and hear that the markets may be closed tomorrow. big apple bracing for the big hurricane. statu of liberty reopened to the public. but super storm sandy shutting it down. stairs were replace exclude there is wheelchairac sess to the day. it is her 126th birthday. >> standing strong and reminding us that we as a nation of immigrants are strong and mil

's what i do here, governor romney in june of this year said we ought to think about getting rid of fema, it may not be necessary, the states can handle he's kinds of situations. your reaction? >> it's absurd. it really is. we have had issues here where the resources of the federal government are extraordinarily important. and we expect more of that. and i think, you know, again as you say not to get too political but what's the irony that here we are eight days before the election and people can be reminded of what he said i think just last year in one of these debates. >> solt here we go, give us a sense of you as governor of delaware, what is it going to look like in the next six hours, the next 12 hours? >> my biggest concern has to do with the power. i've been following over the last few hours, you know, a significant increase in the number of delaware homes without power. that's going to increase and increase and it's going to take a while for the utility companies to get that fixed. so to me that's really the major issue. we have had driving restrictions and i'm appreciative that

and has just now cancelled an event for tomorrow scheduled for green bay, wisconsin and governor romney has also cancelled some of his events. we'll have more on the impact on the presidential race. >> we have correspondents stationed all up and down the east coast. let's start with al roker. >> reporter: if you look back at this beech there's usually on a beautiful sunny day from these dunes out to the water's edge about 150 feet as you can see. that is gone. and it is enencroacroaching on dunes. sandy is threatening these dunes and the winds are picking up. sandy has 85 mile-per-hour winds. it is moving north-northwest at 20 miles per hour. so it's picked up forward speed. and at this at any rate it will be reaching the new jersey shore line sometime within the early evening hours to mid to late evening hours here along the shore line. once that happens as you can see on the path all bets off. this is a massive storm. over 800 miles wide. doesn't matter where it hits. but, the northeast quadrant of the storm is the worst part and that's where it will cause problems for new york, coast
